This project, which was created in the course of my final thesis, explores the role and importance of new media, technologies, and scientific methods in art for the perception and awareness of natural spaces and ecosystems. This is done through the virtual capture and recording of ecosystems, with a particular focus on the use of digital technologies to capture and record aspects of the natural world. The aim of the work is to identify what artistic-technical possibilities there are to make such a recording and what possibilities can be derived from it. Furthermore, the artistic potential of technical programs in the digital recording of natural spaces is to be explored.
For this purpose, a theoretical, historical reappraisal of the representation of nature was carried out, followed by an investigation of technical-artistic works. The knowledge gained there was incorporated into the design of own artistic experiments. For this purpose, a forest area on the outskirts of Vienna was recorded with a lidar scanner and photogrammetry. Visual experiments were then conducted with the captured data, including in the game engine Unity.
